No, it's not a joke. Last weekend I successfully installed Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 on my Linux Debian system with minimal headache. It works via the Wine emulator, and now I can easily test website rendering in IE in addition to Firefox or Opera.

The Romanian government recently passed a law which makes it mandatory for anybody selling or producing software in Romania to register a copy of said software with a national registry. Additionaly, the entire text of the law is riddled with confusing and downright stupid regulations. At this very moment, large numbers of Romanian software makers and dealers are exposed to legal action and serious consequences.

So apparently there's been some ruckus these days regarding what has been dubbed "the first trojan for Mac OS X". I fully expect that by now there are at least some articles and a few thousand comments all over the Web saying: "See? It wasn't so secure after all!" Except that this isn't a security problem in the classical sense; it's a social engineering attack.

I come today to tell you that Web designers have lost sight of the forest because of the trees. They've painted the non-standard visitors as the last bastion of diversity, which must be conquered, and in doing so they also painted the vast majority as one big unified blob, which it isn't. Guess what, diversity isn't made up of just the technology that the user has available. What about the user preferences? What about the customizations that he or she applies to your site in order to make themselves more confortable?

# <a ping>: accurate link tracking

Darin Fisher implemented a new attribute (ping) for the HTML link tag, which would instruct browsers to notify a certain URL of the link that was just followed. This is based on a WhatWG proposed specification and was only implemented so far in Firefox test builds.
